Description
Image of a municipal loan certificate issued by the City of Philadelphia and made out in manuscript to Henry A. Snyder on September 5, 1878, with signatures of the president, cashier, and transfer officer of the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank and the Philadelphia City Controller, future Pennsylvania Governor Robert E. Pattison; eight surrounding vignettes including a view of Independence Hall, and the adjacent Old City Hall building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at top center; head-and-shoulder portraits of George Washington, at upper left, Benjamin Franklin, at lower left, Henry Clay, at upper right, and William Penn, at lower right; and vignettes of a blacksmith standing before an anvil and hammer, at center left, and a young barefoot woman holding sheaves of grain above her head with a scythe behind her.
"American Bank Note Co. Philada."--text, bottom center margin. "Centennial Loan. / Loan No. 55 / Approved May 13, 1873."--text, top left corner in circular star border. "200"--text, top right corner in circular border. "Countersigned"--text, bottom left corner. “This Certifies that there is due by the City of Philadelphia unto Henry A Snyder No 1202 Locust Street Philada or assigns Two Hundred Dollars with interest at the rate of Six per centum per annum, payable half-yearly on the first day of January and July at The Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Philadelphia, the principal not reimbursable without the consent of the holder hereof before the first day of July 1903. … Philadelphia September 5th 1878 … In Attestation whereof The City Controller has hereunto set his hand and affixed the seal of the City of Philadelphia.
