Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Instead of facing the field, shot putter Parry O'Brien turned to face the back of the circle. Pivoting his weight, he turned 180 degrees and used momentum to heave the shot. With his nimble footwork and brute strength, the Santa Monica High and USC grad became the first man to throw over 60 feet. He also broke the world record 16 times and won two Olympic gold medals (1952, 1956). Photo dated: March 21, 1951.
