Description: A significant map showing the advantage of steam ships over sailing vessels in the South Pacific coastal trade. Sailing vessels are forced well off shore due to prevailing winds, where steam ships can hug the coast, shortening the passage time by days. Possibly from Wheelwright's 1838 report suggesting such navigation to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company. See LC 05027803. Prime meridian: GM. Relief: no. Projection: Polyconic.
