Description
Bound ledger with marbled paper facing (sold by Oliver Holman & Co. (124 State Street, Boston)). An index card tucked inside reads: "Account book of the ship Sterling, which plied the California coast in 1844. The names of many San Joseans and other residents of the Santa Clara Valley appear in this book. Courtesy of Paul R. Teilh, Santa Clara County Clerk." (The Sterling sank in Sacramento - for more information, see https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=23523) On each left-facing page is a name and a list of what appear to be purchases; on the facing pages towards the beginning of the ledger are credits (as the ledger progresses, these facing pages are blank). The first two pages of the ledger appear to be an index of names, listed by town, and associated page number. The ledger is blank after page 100. Page 31 is labeled "Customs." Towns: Monterey, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, and San Pedro. Names: William Hinckly, Pablo de la Guerra, Antonio Maria Osio, Rafael Gonzales, W. E. P. Hartnell, Salvador Munras, J.
