Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Ground covered with potatoes next to railroad track, people trying to gather them off the ground. Per broadcast script, "Mashed Potatoes. Instant mashed potatoes resulted when a Southern Pacific Freight struck a truck hauling potatoes a mile north of Gonzales. The driver of the semi hauling two trailers apparently failed to heed the crossing signal. The train, traveling about 30 miles per hour demolished the rear trailer...draping itself in potatoes. Clifford Oscar Vincent of Salinas, the driver of the truck was treated at Salinas Hospital for cuts and bruises and later released. The potatoes required several hours to clean up..." Segment 2 (silent): Students bashing a car with sledgehammers. A woman tries her hand at it, but the hammer is too heavy for her and she loses it through the window. The script reads, "Car bash. For most Santa Clara County college students, this is final exam week. A week of cramming, tests and tension. The students at West Valley College, however, have a release for this tension in the form of a 1956 model automobile...and a sledge hammer. The Alpha Gamma Sigma Honorary and the College German Club are co-sponsoring a 'car bash.' The purpose of the 'bash' is two-fold...to provide a means for release of final week frustration...and to provide funds for the sponsoring organizations. For 25 cents the student can unleash his wrath a total of three times upon the defenseless auto. The 'car bash' will continue until noon on Thursday at the Latimer Avenue parking lot at West Valley College." Segment 3 (silent): Women answering phones at multiple tables, with campaign sign on wall, "Your vote will build a park in this area / Yes All 12 Projects / Feb. 1 / San Jose Improvement." Script reads, "San Jose's $57m bond election if next Tuesday, and final get out the vote drives are getting underway. This afternoon, volunteer workers at bond headquarters began checking out a series of telephones to be used in the closing days of the election. In 'Operation Telephone,' nearly fifty women will begin calling to combat voter apathy..." Segment 4 (sound): Interview with State Senator Donald Grunsky, introduced in script, "State Senator Donald Grunsky, Republican of Watsonville, addressed a group of Monterey County Young Republicans last night in Carmel Valley. Grunsky faces a pair of other veteran legislators in coming elections as a result of the 1965 legislative re-apportionment. The three men vying for the newly created 17th district will be Grunsky, fellow Republican Vernon Sturgeon...Senator from San Luis Obispo...and Democratic Senator Fred Farr of Carmel. In an interview with Channel 11 news last night, Grunsky says he finds no real disagreement for a primary contest..." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Woman hiding her face as she walks out of a house to a car, house is number 1484, close-up of gun and blood on floor, screen door, police outside. Related to story on grand jury indictments according to script: "The newly empaneled Santa Clara County Grand Jury returned a pair of murder indictments...a shooting the morning of the 17th was the subject of the second indictment. 34-year old Helen Bacigalupi was charged with the murder of her former husband, and the attempted murder of his wife. Police said 37-year old Gerald Bacigalupi answered a knock on his door at 1484 Carmel Way. His ex wife pumped six bullets thru the screen door. Officers said the two had difficulties since their divorce which gave most of the property and custody of the children to the husband..." Segment 2 (silent): Scenes of voting; women staffing tables, close-ups of official ballot in February 1st bond vote, shots of ballots going into ballot boxes.
