James Fraser discusses his book, “A History of Hope.” He begins by explaining the premise of the book, which is that the United States was founded on hope for the future and has been powered by it throughout its history. From there he tells of the Pueblo Indian revolt against the Spanish in 1680 in which they drove the Conquistadors out of New Mexico for twelve years. He then discusses the American Revolution, George Washington, and the American separation of church and state. Fraser goes on to share a brief history of the Shakers and the Oneidas that he argues were made possible thanks to the religious freedom provided by the American Revolution. Later in the interview he goes on to discuss several other American historical events that demonstrate how groups and individuals spurred by hope for a better world acted on their beliefs.
